What should you do now ?
We sometimes ask this question when something bad has happened and we are in a undesirable situation and want to escape it.
However I want to discuss about another time you might ask yourself this question.
Yes I've found myself asking this question multiple times over the past few months and the context was completely different.
I'm not in a bad situation, I usually ask this when I have completed a big task and there's nothing more to do.
So I googled the word should :
Apparently we have been using the word "should" a lot less than before and the trend is that it's decreasing.
Could this mean that the number of things we should do have been decreasing?
It seems true given we have been automating and making machines to do boring repeative tasks that reduce what we need to do and what takes our personal time.
Which means that we are headed towards a future where there would be no shoulds or musts.
No "have to"s
We can then choose the games we would like to play. And not have to play by the rules of a game that we do not like.
There is nothing I should do now.
Should only comes when there is something beyond my reach that I want.
For example:
If you want to be healthy you should eat better food, and you should not eat too much.
But what if health was not a concern?, if in future the technology was so advanced that we could upload our minds to a server and eat what ever we wanted, even poison, and we could restore into a new physical body, if our previous one stopped functioning well.
There would be no "should" related to eating at that time.
You could eat anything. Because there would be no downsides.
Maybe today we have already achieved a part of that freedom. And there are less "should do"s than before and we can do whatever we want to do today, more than we could before.
So one answer to the question "what should you do now ?"
Is to do whatever you want to do now, reap the rewards you and your ancestors have been showing for eons.
-Until next time
